Research essay (1500-2000 words)
Option 1: Consider the popularity of reality television shows such as Say Yes to the Dress, Don’t Tell the Bride, and I Found the Gown. Compare the approaches and aims of two examples of your choice, and reflect on why this genre has become so popular.
Option 2: Choose a recent bridal wear collection (such as by Benjamin Roberts, Maggie Sottero, Monique Lhuillier, or Vera Wang) and discuss the global and historical influences within the styles. Choosing two or three dresses or considering the collection as a whole, expand the discussion to consider how these influences are shown, and the type of effect the designers are aiming to produce in a twenty-first-century wedding.
Option 3: Using a recent or historic wedding photograph from your own family archives, provide an exploratory case study of the garments portrayed. Make sure you thoroughly introduce the background, culture, time period, and any other important details, and continue to discuss how the clothes worn reflect the aesthetic and societal values of the time and place.
Option 4: Explore traditional bridal wear for men and women from a country of your choice. Trace its origins and development, and describe its current place and use within that culture, considering whether its influence has spread further across the globe—and if so, in what ways and to what end.
Or: With your tutor, devise a question of your choice that covers one or more of the themes discussed throughout this course.
