Alberta Ferretti was born in 1950 in Gradara, a town in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, Italy. Her mother had a tailor’s shop where Alberta spent a lot of time as she grew up, cultivating her enthusiasm for fashion. In 1968, at just eighteen years of age, she opened her first boutique with a workshop in Cattolica on the Adriatic coast, where she sold her first creations alongside labels like Krizia, Giorgio Armani, and Versace.
In 1974, after gaining experience in the boutique, Alberta Ferretti created her first real collection. But it was only in 1981 that she showed a collection for the first time in Milan, a year after having founded the firm Aeffe with her brother Massimo (who is now its president). Aeffe takes its name from her initials. The business began with the Alberta Ferretti line and, at the same time, began to produce and distribute the collections of important brands such as Enrico Coveri, Rifat Ozbek, Jean Paul Gaultier, Narciso Rodriguez, Moschino, Emanuel Ungaro, Cedric Charlier, and Pollini, as well as the collections designed by Alberta Ferretti. In 1984 Ferretti Jeans Philosophy was set up, a line created for youngsters and which was soon to be renamed Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti. Since 2001, Ferretti’s collections have included beachwear, lingerie, and accessories. Her women’s wear is based on pure and minimal lines, romanticism, and carefully chosen fabrics and shapes: all the allure of a light and sensitive femininity that is never blatant.
In 1998 Alberta Ferretti was nominated for an Order of Merit for Labor, allowing her to use the title Cavaliere del Lavoro, as an honor for her economic and social influence in Italy. At the end of the 1990s, together with her brother Massimo, she wholeheartedly invested in the reconstruction of Montegridolfo, a small medieval village on the borders of Urbino and Montefeltro: a confirmation of her role as a curator and an ambassador for Italian cultural heritage.
