The British Fashion Council, a group formed in 1983 to develop and position London as a world fashion capital, created New Generation (New Gen) in 1993 as a way of identifying and supporting emerging British fashion talent. New Generation provides financial support and the opportunity to use the British Fashion Council’s catwalk space for fashion shows. It also offers sponsored presentation and exhibition space to show collections.
Presentations and catwalk shows take place twice yearly, during the fall/winter and spring/summer London fashion weeks, introducing young designers to a network of fashion professionals including buyers and the international fashion press. This journalistic and commercial support is underscored by its current selection committee, whose members include fashion critic Sara Mower (chair); Caroline Rush (cochair) of the British Fashion Council; Vogue’s style editor Emma Elwick-Bates; Net-A-Porter’s buying director, Holli Roger; Topshop’s creative director, Kate Phelan; the buying director of Browns, Laura Larbalestier; and Topshop’s head of buying, Madelaine Evans. As a result, New Gen has become a highly visible platform for launching young designers’ careers.
Previous award winners include Alexander McQueen, Boudicca, Matthew Williamson, Christopher Kane, Erdem, and Mary Katrantzou. New Gen Men, an initiative built to support menswear designers by building business and commercial relationships with press and buyers, started in 2009. The New Gen fund has been supported by Topshop since 2001. A new group of designers is chosen for each fashion week.
